The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Tokyo 2020) today announced an outline of Olympic ticket sales channels and other ticketing information for people living in Japan. Fans will very soon have the opportunity to obtain tickets to see the world's best athletes perform in the planet's greatest sporting festival.
Residents of Japan can register on Tokyo 2020's online platform in order to obtain a TOKYO 2020 ID. With this ID, from the spring of 2019, they will be able to apply for tickets before they go on general sale.
In the spring of 2019, those with TOKYO 2020 IDs will be invited to participate in an online lottery. After the initial tickets are allocated, the remaining tickets will be made available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The TOKYO 2020 ID portal is currently available in Japanese, with an English version to set to launch before sales begin. It can be accessed at https://id.tokyo2020.org/.
Interest in Tokyo 2020 tickets has proven to be popular with more than 1.2 million people having obtained their TOKYO 2020 ID. Tokyo 2020 strongly recommends that those interested register immediately so they will be at the front of the queue for information about ticketing over the next months.
Finally, from the spring of 2020, ticket box offices will open in Tokyo and official resale services will kick-off in Japan.
With a record 339 events in 33 sports, Tokyo 2020 offers non-stop action for everyone. Ticket prices have been set to suit a wide range of budgets, allowing as many people as possible to attend Olympic events. Millions of tickets will be available at affordable prices, with half of all tickets priced at JPY 8,000 or less.
The lottery system aims to give as many people as possible a chance to purchase tickets for the event of their choice. After registering and obtaining their TOKYO 2020 ID, people will be able to apply for tickets during the lottery phase. Should their application be unsuccessful, they will still be able to buy tickets during the first-come, first-served phase.
A more detailed schedule, including the ticket sales launch date and other details regarding ticketing, will be announced later.
Those living outside of Japan will be able to order tickets through the National Olympic Committee of their respective country or region or via their authorised ticket resellers. A list of these organisations in each country will be published by the spring of 2019 on the official Tokyo 2020 ticket sales site.
